Elsa... August 8, 2009 1:14 PM

Oh, Bonnie! You have me (ROFL) rolling on the floor laughing with your reminiscing….!!!!

Let me just say that a few years after we graduated, I was working at Sears in Managua (Yes, sir we had A Sears in Managua!) for Rodney Jackman, who was the “Gerente General’ at Sears… and the store had this contest for a “catchy phrase” to go along with some marketing campaign going on in all the stores in the Spanish speaking countries… and I was intent on winning it (it had a big cash prize)… So I came up with several phrases… and then… bingo! I thought of Dr. Bisbee… went looking for him… and found him!!!

He was living in a thatched roofed house.. un ranchito de paja practicamente, with dirt floors—and there he was with his ‘mujercita’… Dulcinea, I suppose… en una extrema austeridad! The young girl (wife) was holding a young child.. and there were other “chillin’s” running around… which made me believe he was very active reproducing late in life… Men are so lucky that way… or are they???

Anyway… I knew he was eccentric… but it was a shock to see the whole thing… It stayed with me for a long time… Money really meant nothing to him, he lived in his own world of imagination… y me parece que posiblemente comia una vez por semana… porque era puro huesos con imaginacion y fascinacion sobretodo por El Quijote de la Mancha, El Cid y demas…

Anyway, to make a long story, short… I won the contest with his help… and it made me very happy to share the prize with him! Last I checked, they were still using that same logo.. or “catchy phrase” to promote… Oh, now I remember! Profit sharing!!!

Que divertida la vida.. the twists and turns… At least at my end, I can honestly tell you that if there were dull moments, they were fleeting indeed… it has been quite a ride indeed, with the good, the bad, the ugly, the absurd, lo divertido and the painful all mixed in! No me puedo imaginar lo que seria, por ejemplo, haber nacido en Wichita, Kansas, crecido y haber ido al colegio, casarse y quedarse y morirse alli… de solo pensarlo es como para pegarse un tiro con un banano, no crees?

By the way, till this day… I never ‘got’ either Don Quijote or El Cid… because he would analyze one paragraph to death… asi que el cuento nunca lo lograbas at that time… at least I never did then… did you???

Bueno, Bonnie divina… I’ll attach 3 pictures taken last year. I’ll try to find good ones para que no te asustes!
