Bruce... August 8, 2009 10:53 AM

I'm sure some of you remember the Singer car that Peter and/or Paul drove. I
don't know anything about cars, but an internet search revealed that Singer was
a British carmaker founded in 1905 that stopped making cars in 1970. That one in
Nicaragua was the only one I've ever seen or heard of. I've attached a photo of
something similar to the car I remember the Hoar boys driving. Correct me if I'm
wrong... I'm pretty sure it was the Hoars but I definitely remember the car
because I saw the name Singer on the engine and I wondered, sewing machines?
Different company.

I don't recall the names... but obviously at least one of the Hoars, myself, and
probably Mike Murray, maybe Dennis Wilson, Mike Green, or Neal Gruwell... but I
think there were four of us.

We were hanging out at my house and we decided to go see (pick one of the
following) the Coverstons, Carole Case, or Nadine. My house was at kilocho and I
think the girls were up around kilometer 11 or 13, is that right?

I'm getting to the story, be patient!

So four boys wanted to go visit some girls and all we had for transportation was
a two-seater Singer car. One of us climbed up on the back with our feet dangling
into the front seat, but when the second one did the same the weight was too
much and I don't think the springs could handle it. It was a tiny little car!

Our solution was for three of us to ride while the fourth ran alongside. The
runner was going almost at a sprint while those in the car were hollering, "move
your ass, pick up those feet, come on you lazy SOB, run!" After about a quarter
mile the runner would hop on board and the next guy would jump out and start
running. We did that relay all the way to our destination.

I think the girl(s) we were going to see weren't at home, but that didn't matter
because we had so much fun on the trip. We didn't do the same for the return, as
I think we coerced a parent to come get a couple of us.
