Greetings from Corpus Christi and thanks for "tracking" me down. My wife , son and I have been living here on Padre Island for about 14 years and consider ourselves to be Texans now. If you are ever down this way stop in and see us. After we left Nicaragua in early 1964, we moved to Iowa where I went to college and med school, graduating from the U. of Iowa in 1973. Professional training and work has been in pediatrics and emergency medicine until 2002 when my focus changed from acute care to wellness and prevention. In 1992 I met my wife in the Philippines and we have a 14 year old son that we love very much who will be a high school freshman in about two weeks. It was great to read the messages on the blogsite you set up - brought back a flood of good memories. The picture you posted of our 1963 ANS basketball team (undefeated national champions) was missing our coach, Russell Schubert and at least one other player - my good buddy, Mike Green. The team Queen of course was Kathy Sue. Was Mr. Schubert a great coach or what? I remember he hosted a formal dinner for us after the end of that season at the Gran Hotel and every one of us received an award for something or other; he is by far the best coach I ever had. Will close for now; next time I'll try to post some pictures.

I've searched the internet for coach Shubert a few times with no luck. I agree with you David, I always thought he was a great coach and a great man. When we left Nica he was dating Cecilia the fresca stand lady. Someone said he married her, and that made me glad, if true. Anyone know anything about him after 1964?
ReplyDeleteBruce, toward the end of our junior year and just before my family and I returned to the States, I noticed Cecilia was looking pretty down. When I asked her why, she told me that Mr. Shubert had told her that he was going back to California to marry someone that he was engaged to. Somebody sent my father a 1965 ANS yearbook (which I have here along with the 1964 edition) and they were back together. So I wouldn't be surprised if they did get married.
ReplyDeleteBruce, I just remembered that Mr. Shubert was a graduate of San Diego State University. Maybe we can get some help from them in finding him. David.
ReplyDeleteSorry Bruce, Mr. Shubert's alma matter was California Western University - San Diego. On Monday I'll try to contact their alumni association and see if they can give me any information about him or at least have them pass on some information on how he could contact us. I'm also working on finding Mike Green.
ReplyDeleteI thought it was University of the Pacific. I'd love to track him down, wouldn't he be surprised? I guess he'd be well into his 70s by now. I hope you can find him and Mike!
ReplyDeleteMay be a long shot but I sent a message of inquiry to the alumni assoc at U. of Pacific.
ReplyDeleteFound him. I'm sending his email to you privately, David.
